During a severe rainstorm that can cause water damage and flooding, a restoration company like SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West ARden Arcade can recommend demolition. It can be disturbing to a homeowner when a restoration company recommends demolition as an option to prevent further water damage.
What are the reasons SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden Arcade recommend demolition services?
Even though every storm event and flood damage is different and unique, there are three main reasons why our team of technicians may pursue demolition as a mitigation or remediation tactic.
-Safety Hazard Control and Water Mitigation
Roof leaks can be caused by high, strong winds or debris that damage the roof shingles and allow water to flow into the home. Rather than wait for the roof or ceiling to collapse, SERVPRO removes affected material to allow water to be released rather than the affected area collecting water and bubbling.
-Disposal of Damaged Building Materials
SERVPRO intends to remove the damaged portions that we cannot restore such as water damaged drywall and buckled flooring. With every affected material removed, we anticipate it to be replaced with the same material or upgraded material.
-Access to Wet Cavities to Improve Structural Drying Efficiency
Flood cuts or drilling holes in baseboards. We drill small holes to either drain water or allow our drying equipment to reach the confined wet areas.

- Surface porosity
For surface porosity, the more porous a material, the more likely it is to absorb odors i.e. carpet, carpet pad, insulation
- Heat
Heat from fire causes materials to expand which allow odors to penetrate. Materials that cool down after the fire end up trapping odors within the material
So, how do we reduce smoke odor?
- Air scrubbers
Air scrubbers capture airborne microorganisms and eliminate surface microorganism and effectively aid in the filtration and cleaning of the airspace

Elk Grove Fire Cleanup
9/4/2020 (Permalink)
Fire damage can cause absolute devastation, so we are there to help you when you need it most.
Fires. One of nature's most destructive processes. Fires are useful, they allow us to do things like cook food and drive cars when controlled. But if they are left for one second in an uncontrolled environment, fires cause immense devastation. So much devastation that there is a whole industry that revolves around the reparations from damage caused by fires.
- Dry smoke residue is caused by high heat, fast burning fires fueled by wood and paper. This is what you usually think of when you imagine ash and soot--powdery and dry. The fine powder is often simpler to clean since it is easy to wipe off. However, it can fall into cracks and porous surfaces, and while the soot may be hidden from view, the smell will remain.
- Wet smoke residue is caused by low-heat, slow-burning fires from burning plastic or rubber. This black smoke leaves behind an often thick and sticky residue with a strong odor. Wet smoke residue smears easily, which often makes cleanup more difficult.
- Protein residue is left behind after the evaporation of organic material, usually food. The residue is almost invisible. However, it discolors varnishes, paints, and finishes. It also gives off a strong, offensive odor.
- Water damage can be caused by any relief efforts to put out the fires. The water can be introduced through firefighting or smoke detecting water sprinklers. It is so important to dry out the structure as well, because if it is left unattended mold will grow.
It is so important to remediate as soon as possible in order to prevent secondary damage, whether that be mold damage or ash that set into the structure.
Let SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden Arcade help you out. We have trained technicians that are available 24/7 for your restoration needs. Give us a call at 916-285-7257 for a free estimate today.
Cupping and Crowning in Hardwood
9/4/2020 (Permalink)
This floor is cupping due to a recent water damage.
Wood naturally contains moisture, although the porous nature of wood will cause it to absorb more moisture when it encounters water. The nature of wood causes it to expand when it absorbs this excess moisture, and sometimes the wood can warp. These expanded boards may push against each other and buckle where the boards meet and may become permanent after the wood dries. Floors must be replaced if proper drying and refinishing cannot remove the damage.
Cupping and Crowning
Cupping occurs when water is absorbed from the sides and bottom of the wood. This normally happens when water pools underneath the wood during a water loss. The edges will slightly raise or “cup.” Cupping can often be sanded out.
Crowning occurs when the top of the wood holds more moisture than the sides and the bottom of the wood. This makes the wood arch or create a bowed shape in the middle. Most of the time you cannot sand out crowned flooring.
What to do?
Water on hardwood floors should be extracted immediately to prevent further damage. Wet carpets and pads over hardwood floors should be removed. Finished wood flooring may sometimes return to its original shape and be restored. It is important to utilize proper drying techniques with air movers and dehumidifiers to give the best conditions for restoration.
If your hardwood floors have been affected by water damage, give the pros a call at 916-285-7257! We would be happy to check it out for you.
Note: Only hardwood floors affected by clean water should be restored. If your hardwood floor was affected by contaminated water, it should be removed by a professional. For more information on what to do when your home is damaged by contaminated water, click here.

This equipment is set up in an optimal position to increase drying.
Our team at SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden Arcade understands how pivotal the proper equipment is to lessening the cost of a water damage. While speed is important to reducing the resulting damage, technology and equipment are essential to dry the structure. SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden Arcade technicians are prepared to answer your call quickly and use their state-of-the-art-equipment to help dry a structure and personal property efficiently.
Using psychrometry, the study of the air and it’s properties, SERVPRO has developed professional equipment that measures and utilizes the properties of temperature, humidity, vapor pressure, and dew point to evaluate the air conditions in the structure. SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden Arcade professionals are taught to use these numbers to create a proper atmosphere for effective drying. Restoration professionals are taught to manipulate temperature and humidity levels to produce prime drying conditions without causing secondary damage through improper drying processes.
Detection Equipment
When SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden Arcade professionals are first at your property, they will perform a scope, which involves locating the areas of the structure affected by water damage and defining the extent to which the structure and contents have absorbed moisture. Our technicians use moisture detection devices that are also used to verify an environment has been dried thoroughly.
- Moisture meters are instruments that is used to detect the moisture content in materials. Our moisture meters test moisture readings that enable our technicians to monitor the drying process.
- Moisture Sensors are instruments designed to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards, and walls.
- Thermo-hygrometers are used to measure temperature and relative humidity. SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden Arcade professionals use this tool to create a psychrometric chart to calculate specific humidity, dew point, and vapor pressure.
Drying Equipment
When drying a structure, many tools are used to remove water from materials and provide mitigation services. Our SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden Arcade technicians are taught through the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), the standard setting non-profit organization that provides training for restoration technicians, to use psychometrics to dry a structure in the best way.
- Extractors are used to remove water from floors after a water damage. Extractors can be truck mounted or portable, weighted or handheld. The best way to respond quickly to a water damage is through extraction.
- Air Movers are used in water damage restoration to enhance evaporation at the surface level to reduce drying time. When the airflow to the surface increases, the moisture in the air increases. The moisture is then eliminated from the air using dehumidifiers.
- Dehumidifiers are used to lower the relative humidity to increase the rate of evaporation. Dehumidifiers pull in the moist, humid air and discharging dry, warm air. This dry air acts like a sponge, absorbing moisture from wet materials. The two types of dehumidifiers are:
- Refrigerant – work similarly to air conditioners
- Desiccant – use chemicals to absorb moisture through the air
SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden Arcade uses quality equipment to help dry your structure every time. Call us at 916-285-7257 for a no-cost assessment of your property.

Water Damage FAQ
5/15/2020 (Permalink)
When a water damage occurs in your place of business, you may feel confusion and frustration. There seems like there is so much to do, and there are so many questions you might have! Here at SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden-Arcade, we have heard it all. In this blog post, we hope to outline a couple questions you might have as a business owner or homeowner that has experienced water damage.
Q: What happens when my business takes on water damage?
A: When water contacts drywall, it sags and disintegrates. Then you’ll see paint bubbles and peeling as the water wicks up the drywall. After that, water saturates the insulation behind the drywall.
If water dwells in your property for any length of time, wood structures begins to swell. The glue holding your particle board kitchen and bathroom cabinets dissolves, causing them to crumble. The longer the water dwells in your property, the more likely it is that the hardwood floors will buckle and warp. Wood exposed to long-term water damage rots.
Water-soaked carpets “delaminate.” Delamination is the term for carpet that pulls away from its backing. Once this happens, the carpet is permanently ruined.
Water damage can short-out electrical systems. This can cause fire and shock hazards and damage to electronic equipment.
To see some photos of water damage to homes and businesses, click here!
Q: Why is water damage dangerous?
A: There are multiple types of water damage, that differ in intensity based on the amount of contaminants. Floodwater that comes from outside and from sewage backups contains dangerous contaminants like viruses and bacteria.
If water is left standing or saturated in a structure for 24-48 hours, structural damage and mold growth can ensue. Even water leaks that infiltrate your home slowly can cause damage to the building and lead to mold growth. Mold left unchecked will spread quickly through the home.
Q: How much does it take to restore my home or business?
A: It all depends on the size and scope of the loss. Completely drying a structure depends on the type of water damage, how bad it was, how long the water dwelled, and the type of building materials involved. In most cases, our goal to dry out water damage to a home or business is around 2 to 3 days. However, properties exposed to water damage for a long time will take longer to dry!
Q: Do I have to close my place of business during reconstruction and demolition?
A: If the property damage doesn’t require a lot of reconstruction, you can stay in your home or office.
However, the equipment we use during the drying process can be noisy. It also creates a lot of air movement which may be considered as unlivable or unworkable conditions.
If the bathrooms in your office, or the kitchen in your home are a part of the damaged area, check with your insurance company for reimbursement of alternate living expenses or business continuity expenses until the restoration job is complete.
Q: Should I ever turn off the equipment?
A: No! If it is off, it isn’t working! The specialized equipment works through duration of time, and our it is made to run continuously without overheating or causing safety problems. Remember, we position the equipment in a particular way to promote the drying process. Please don’t move it.
Since we know the noise might be problematic, we often suggest you call your insurance agent to see if your policy covers alternate living expenses or business continuity expenses.
Q: Can water damage be prevented?
A: When a water damage is an act of nature—there is not a lot you can do. Flooding happens, disasters happen, but not as often as it seems. While flooding is a frequent cause of water damage, most water damage is due to indoor plumbing failure. To prevent water damage, the key is regular maintenance and inspections of the following:
- Check your appliances (e.g., dishwasher, clothes washer, and water heater) to assure they are all in good working order. Check all water connections and hoses. Remember to do this even if you have the metal braided supply hoses.
- Check under your sinks for signs of corrosion and make sure connections are tight.
- Check the toilets in each bathroom for any signs of leaking.
- Monitor your water bills. A sudden, unexplained increase in water use can be caused by a leak.
- Finally, make sure everyone knows how and where to shut off the water to the property. If you ever are out of business for a significant amount of time—shut off the water. Some of the worst damages we have seen are when residents are out of town.
There’s never a convenient time for flooding or water damage to strike your business. Every hour spent cleaning up is an hour of lost revenue and productivity. So when an emergency situation arises in your business, give us a call and we’ll be there fast with the help you need.

Sacramento Mold Removal
5/1/2020 (Permalink)
The best thing to do to avoid mold growth from roof leaks is to check the attic regularly for leaks and keep an eye on the ceiling below the attic.
It is important to know how mold occurs in a residence to avoid mold growth in your own home. Mold growth occurs indoors when mold spores are in the presence of a moisture.
Water damage is caused by a multitude of reasons including appliance leaks, toilet overflow, flooding, incorrectly installed windows, and broken water heater lines, just to name a few. And since mold spores are always present, if you don't remediate your water damage, mold growth will occur within 72 hours in the presence of moisture.
What Should I Know Before I Call a Professional?
You probably don't need to get mold testing! If you can see mold, you most likely don't need to spend money on testing, and it just needs to be removed. If mold is seen or smelled, there are potential health effects; therefore, no matter what type of mold is present, you should arrange for its removal.
Your homeowners insurance most likely will not cover damage. According to Insurance.com, policies usually don't cover mold resulting from a preventable water leak, flooding, or high humidity. This is because home insurance companies typically don't pay for maintenance issues they think a homeowner should have proactively taken care of.
The expense of mold removal can be costly--in some cases it can be over $1000. Although some mold professionals out there have exaggerated the work that needs to be done to drive up the price. If your quote seems unusually high, we recommend getting several quotes to compare. (However, if you get a quote that’s shockingly low, that’s also a big red flag. Companies that don’t do things properly are the only ones that can charge shockingly low prices.)

Water Damage Restoration in Northern California

This water loss in Elk Grove shows the damage and mold that was growing under laminate flooring from a water loss.
Floating floors, usually referred to as Laminate Flooring are great looking, low cost flooring solutions. However, it is very important if you have a water loss that you have a professional inspect these floors for moisture with professional equipment.
Floating floors have a foam or plastic under-layment. When water hits these floors they almost always will get under the floorboards, and get trapped in-between the flooring and the under-layment. There it can sit for a long time and slowly get worse and worse without you even knowing about it.
To the normal eye it will appear as if the floor is completely normal and dry, but only professional moisture meters can truly tell you if there is hidden moisture that needs to be taken care of. If the issue is not addressed, Mold can literally begin to grow right under your feet.
If your laminate floors have been affected by water damage, give the pros a call at 916-285-7257! We would be happy to check it out for you.

Sick building syndrome can cause lower performance in your employees!
Have you ever heard of “sick building syndrome”? It’s a phenomenon in the workplace that that The National Institute of Health describes as a situation in which the occupants of a building experience acute health or comfort related effects that seem to be linked directly to the time spent in the building. Sick Building Syndrome is often attributed to poor indoor air quality, which is how inside air can affect a person's health, comfort, and ability to work.
Some Factors that Can Affect Air Quality
- Poor ventilation
- Temperature control problems
- Too high or too low humidity
- Recent remodeling
- Contaminants
- Dust from renovation
- Mold
- Cleaning supplies/pesticides
- Airborne chemicals
3 Lines of Defense Against Potential Exposure to Identified Hazards
- Eliminating the source: This would include removal, substitution, and enclosure of pollutant sources. This is considered the most effective method when applied in a practical manner. Listed below are a few ways you can eliminate the source of your poor air quality:
- HVAC Cleaning
- General dilution ventilation
- Mold Remediation
- Local exhaust
- Administrative Controls:
- Limiting exposure to pollutant, by means of scheduling
- Training employees about the sources and effects of pollutants under their control
- Housekeeping

California Wildfire Cleanup
10/11/2019 (Permalink)
Firefighters battle a wind-driven wildfire in Sylmar, California, October 11, 2019.
As we move into the wildfire season once again, SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West-Arden Arcade wanted to take a moment to reflect on the fires that are affecting the State of California. Currently, the Saddleridge Brush fire is burning in Southern California, and 100,000 people have been evacuated. And while power has just been restored to hundreds of thousands of residents across California, the threat of wildfires across the state is still weighing heavy in our minds.
If you have been affected by the fires, here are some tips on what to do before help arrives:
- Limit movement in home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpet.
- Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork
- Place dry, colorfast towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery, and carpet traffic areas.
- Change HVAC filter, but leave system off until a professional can check the system.
What to NOT do when you have fire and smoke damage:
- Attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces.
- Attempt to shampoo carpet or upholstered furniture.
- Attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to ire, heat, or water.
- Consume any food or beverages that may have been stored closed to fire, heat, or water.
- Turn on ceiling fixtures.
- Send garments to the dry cleaner. Improper cleaning will set in the smoke odor.
If you have fire damage, give us a call at 916-285-7257.
Apartment Building Cleanup
10/11/2019 (Permalink)
In this photo, you can see a heavily damaged apartment building hallway caused by a broken pipe.
In an apartment community residence will share walls from the sides and from above and below. When a water damage occurs, it can get out of hand quickly, since a water damage can affect multiple residences. You can never know when an emergency will occur, but it’s in your best interest as a property manager to always be prepared for anything. Taking these measures by the American Apartment Owners Association can help you prevent damage in the future.
- Inspect the property regularly. It is important to ask about repair needs and to check out major systems on a regular basis. If the problem is caught early, then damage can be minimized or avoided.
Water causes millions of dollars to the rental industry each year. Landlords in updated buildings are seeing damage due to the use of materials that aren’t holding up as expected. Most of the water damage is due to faulty plumbing, which can cause secondary damage like mold and other costly repairs, so it is important to inspect regularly. - By acting early when you receive a repair request, then it can help save you money and keep the property in good condition.
- Pay attention to utility spikes. Whether you pay the utilities, or your tenant complains about a sudden increase, take it seriously. It is a warning sign that something may be spilling out. It can even signal a drug manufacturing operation which one of most costly repair jobs you will ever encounter.
- Watch the weather. Storms cause significant property damage, and lately we’ve been seeing some monsters. Once the surge is over, check for roof damage, clogged gutters, and poor drainage that may leak into the foundation. The best time to repair old and damaged roofs is when it’s dry.
- Encourage tenants to carry renters insurance. The main benefit: they won’t ask you to reimburse them for damage. The indirect benefit is making tenants aware of just how much they stand to lose if they are careless and cause damage to the property.
In addition to following these steps, making an emergency readiness plan today can help you tomorrow. The SERVPRO Emergency READY Profile serves as a quick reference of important building and contact information or can be an ideal supplement to any well-designed emergency preparedness or existing contingency program. Rather than simply reacting to disaster situations, most prefer proactive measures to establish a relationship with a restoration services company.

This photo shows how saturated with water this insulation in the attic of a Sacramento home is after a roof leak caused water damage.
When Dealing with Leaks, Take the Following Steps to Minimize Damage:
- Clean up any puddles – standing water will soak in to wood and lead to permanent damage, warping and eventual rot.
- Catch drips – yep, the old bucket under the drip. You want to capture any drips you see so that puddles don’t form
- Find the source of the leak NOW!
- Fix the leak ASAP
The important thing is to find what’s causing the leak. Most rain induced leaks start in the roof. You do NOT want to be climbing around the slippery wet roof during a rainstorm.
Here’s a quick check-list of what to look at when dealing with a roof leak:
- Find where the leak is on the ceiling of the room below. That will lead you to a puddle or soaked insulation in the attic.
- Look for water stains, drip marks, etc. on the rafters above the wet insulation.
- Trace the water up the rafter. It should point right at the leak in the roof.
- Check chimneys where they cut through the roof. Mark the area at the highest point where you see the leak start. This is invaluable for whomever has to fix the leak.
If you do narrow it down to a roof leak, you will need to contact a roofer to fix the leak, and SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden Arcade can handle the water damage.

Our rigorous ongoing training makes sure that our staff is always the best equipped to restore your property quickly and safely.
When you check out SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden-Arcade’s website, chances are you may have ran into a section regarding our Highly Trained Technicians. We take pride in knowing that our staff is always the best equipped to restore your property quickly and safely. From our initial training at the SERVPRO Corporate training facility to regular Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) industry certifications, our employees are constantly learning and growing in the industry to provide top-of-the-line service that you can trust.
Just as certified accountants, plumbers and mechanics project a higher level of competency in their fields, and just as members of the American Medical Association and American Bar Association set themselves a part through training, experience and comprehensive examination — IICRC certification helps to immediately identify the cleaning, restoration and inspection industry’s most skilled and dedicated technicians and businesses.
What is the IICRC?
The IICRC, stands for the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning & Restoration Certification. The IICRC certifies and sets the standards for the cleaning and restoration industries. Our Professionals study IICRC standards and best practices in water restoration, fire restoration, mold remediation, carpet and upholstery cleaning, and other cleaning and restoration courses. Its mission is as follows:
The Mission of the IICRC is to establish and advance globally recognized standards and certifications for the inspection, cleaning, restoration and installation industries.
The IICRC serves as a independent, certification body, that sets and promotes high standards and ethics, and advances communication and technical proficiency within the inspection, cleaning and restoration industries. The IICRC also ensures that when consumers hire a cleantrust-Certified Firm or technician, they have hired experts who will provide reasonable assurance that work will be completed in accordance with the industry’s “standard of care.”
So while they represent our industry in a variety of ways, their core mission has always been to train technicians within the industry on the best-practices of the day. Perhaps one of the biggest catch phrases these days is the ‘pace of innovation’. And while that can apply to the Internet, robotics, etc. it also holds true in the water damage restoration space. And its no surprise, given all of the advanced equipment we are trained to use to mitigate damage to your home or business.
What is included in IICRC Certification?
The IICRC offers a wide variety of training programs to address virtually every part of a property. Whether it’s the cleaning of carpets or remediating mold damage, or anything in between, the IICRC has a class for it. The intensity and length of the various courses differs based on the subject at hand, but a technician must attend a several day class including both classroom instruction and hands-on training. At the end of that period, an examination takes place to ensure retention. After the passing of the exam, the technician is given their certification. And like other professions in which the industry is constantly changing, continuing education must occur. So to maintain an IICRC certification, technicians must take additional courses each year to stay up-to-date on new equipment and learn new methods.
Why does an IICRC certification matter?
Most states require licensing for trade industries in which they deem your health and safety to be at risk should the work be done poorly. Industries like electrical contracting and plumbing come to the top of most people’s mind. But for whatever reason, no states require any sort of licensing for the water mitigation industry. What that means is that literally anyone can start a water damage restoration company without any actual skills or knowledge of how to do that job. The can just cheaply finance some equipment and start taking jobs. We understand the complexities of the work we perform because we’ve seen situations that have even stumped our most experienced technicians. So for us, the fact that anyone can do our jobs is ludicrous.
The fact of the matter is the work we do is going to have a profound impact on the health of your family. If the job isn’t done right, the chances of your home developing a serious mold problem are high. If you don’t know much about mold, here’s a great write-up on the health effects of long-term exposure to mold spores. So even when it comes to a small amount of water damage, it’s imperative you have a certified technician examine the loss. There’s just too much on the line to trust the health of your home and family to someone that doesn’t know what they are doing!
Our technicians are IICRC-certified!
We say it all over our web site because it is important: at SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden-Arcade, you can rest assured the technicians the arrive at your home or place of business are highly trained and certified by the IICRC. So whether or not you decide to hire us to help cleanup your water damaged property, you’ll at least walk away from our on-site assessment confident in the prognosis you’ve received.
North Highlands Mold on Water Heater
8/9/2019 (Permalink)
The damage in this water heater closet was caused by a valve not being tightened on the hot water heater.
When your hot water heater leaks, it can cause a lot of damage to your home, and left untreated, it can lead to mold growth. This mold that grows from hot water heater leaks can cause even more damage to your floors and walls, but it can also cause health effects. Because hot water heaters are often in places of the home where homeowners don’t go very often, there have been many cases that we have seen where homeowners don’t always spot a leaking hot water heater unless the problem has been ongoing for a while.
Spotting a Hot Water Heater Leak
It is important to know how to best identify a hot water leak, because the longer that damage sits in your home, the longer the damage can worsen. It is recommended that you check your hot water heater routinely to ensure that you aren’t experiencing a leak in your home.
- Water on the floor around the hot water heater
- Discoloration of the floor and/or wall around the hot water heater
- Mold on the floor and/or wall around the hot water heater
- Musty odor in the area where your hot water heater is located. A musty odor is a sign of mold, and if you smell that odor, it means you likely have mold somewhere in your home, even if you don’t see it. Since mold often grows in hard-to-spot areas, like inside walls, under carpet and linoleum, and inside heating and ventilation ducts, it’s not unusual to smell mold but not see it.
- Condensation around the hot water heater can sometimes make the floor wet and cause mold to begin to grow.
Other plumbing leaks can cause similar issues. Obviously in order to fix the problem, you need to identify it correctly. Any of these problems can lead to damaged flooring and mold growth, so they all need to be corrected as soon as possible.
Dealing with Mold from a Hot Water Heater
If there is mold around your home, it is important for it to be removed as soon as possible due to the health effects that your household may encounter. Mold can be removed from non-porous surfaces like tile floors with an antimicrobial cleanser and a scrub brush. It’s not possible to remove mold completely from porous surfaces, though, like carpets, drywall and floorboards. Those materials must be removed (carefully, in order not to spread mold spores to other areas of the home in the process) and replaced.
If you are experiencing any mold-related health problems or if you have respiratory problems like asthma or any disorders of the immune system, we recommend not attempting to remove mold yourself because the mold removal process will expose you to more mold spores and can make your condition worse. To protect your health, we recommend calling in a professional for the job in those instances.
Every mold damage scenario is different, and requires a unique solution, but the general mold remediation process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate a “typical” process:
- Emergency Contact
- Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment
- Mold Containment
- Air Filtration
- Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials
- Cleaning Contents and Belongings
- Restoration
In order to prevent mold from returning, it is imperative that you repair any problem, leak, or plumbing problem that led to the development of mold. Otherwise, you’ll soon find yourself dealing with mold again.
Getting Help with a Hot Water Heater Leak
If your hot water heating is leaking or you have mold around your hot water heater, we recommend calling in a mold remediation professional. Your technician can diagnose the problem, figure out where the water is coming from and let you know how to fix it. They can also locate any mold in the home, including mold growing in hard-to-see places, and let you know what needs to be done to correct that problem. Sacramento House Fire Restoration
8/2/2019 (Permalink)
In a fire like this, the task of cleaning up may seem insurmountable. We are always here to help 24/7/365 to ensure quick response in emergencies.
Experiencing a house fire is a frightening, sickening, and very upsetting experience. In the aftermath of a fire, it is very important to know what to do to protect yourself and others from any possibility of further harm. This blog post will help you with key things to do and know after a fire.
If you need to reenter your home, you need to make sure that it is safe to do so.
You need to make sure that the fire is extinguished, that the authorities have established that it is safe to enter, and the severity of the fire. You need to recognize that there is a chance that you might not be able to reenter if the building is too badly damaged.
Know who to call.
- Contact family members that may not have been with you. Let them know what happened, let them know that everybody is okay (if so) and let them know the information that is necessary.
- Contacting your insurance is the number one thing that youneed to do. This will not only enable documentation of the event and set in train the insurance claim but your insurer will be able to talk you through emergency lodging and living expenses. Remember to retain all receipts to make a claim. The insurance company will also assist with clean up options.
- If you are a tenant, contact the owner/landlord and/or their insurance company.
- Anyone who you feel that could be helpful to you, not necessarily just an insurance company but even a restoration company. Restoration companies should work hand in hand with your insurance to take some of that weight off of your shoulders.
Secure the property.
If you have not already being told to do so, it is important to secure your property to prevent possible looting. Talk to emergency services on how best to go about this. Most insurance policies require this.
Consider cleanup requirements
Depending on the severity of the fire, interior cleaning may be what is required. Damage to the property often goes beyond what you can see. Types of damage can include ash, charring, soot, smoke, odor, contents damage, and even water damage from fire fighters putting out the fire.
If water was used to put out the fire, its best to call the professionals.
Water damage can lead to more damage or even mold if not dried properly. Insurance companies will often have approved restoration contractors that you can call for board up, structural drying, contents cleaning and structural cleaning and repair.
Seek counseling if needed and reassure your family.
Having your house damaged or destroyed by fire is extremely traumatic and can have lasting impacts on each family member, depending on his or her ability to cope. Common feelings are helplessness, disorientation, pining for belongings, deep sadness, a sense of deprivation, despair and a loss of routine and structure. Reassure each other and let the emotions happen. Keep a close eye on children and be truthful with them about what has happened and if you do not know what is going to happen next, at least reassure them that you have one another, that things can all be replaced and that the only way is up from here on.
A house fire can be one of the most terrifying experiences you can go through. If you have experienced a fire in your home and need assistance with the cleanup, please give us a call at 916-285-7257, we are available 24/7 and are committed to bringing you the utmost care as quickly and professionally as possible.
Water Damage in the Sacramento Summer
7/26/2019 (Permalink)
In this job, water damage caused by a broken supply line in a washing machine caused damage through the entire home.
The very worst time for water damage to occur is when you’re on vacation and away from home. After all, what could be worse than coming home from a relaxing summer trip only to find that your home has been flooded, or severely damaged by water? Unfortunately, this happens more often than you'd realize. In fact, the Insurance Information Institute has reported that the second most common insurance claim filed by homeowners is water damage to the home. Whether it’s from ruptured washing machine hoses, water heater drips, leaky supply lines, or a busted pipe, the consequences are disastrous. To avoid catastrophe while you’re on vacation this summer, here are a few tips that will help to protect your home.
Complete a Thorough Check Prior to Leaving
Before you leave for your summer vacation, be sure to take the time to inspect your home for any leaks.
- Check out all of the pipes under your kitchen and bathroom sinks
- Examine your water heater for any cracks or rust
- Make sure that windows and doors are properly sealed
- Look out for any signs of roof leaks
- Evaluate any hoses that connect to major household appliances like dishwashers, washing machines, and refrigerators to ensure that they aren’t leaking or showing signs of severe wear.
Clean Your Gutters and Downspouts Before Leaving
Clogged up rain gutters and downspouts can result in pooling water on your roof, and eventually to major leaks and severe water damage. Spending just a little bit of time on removing the debris from these areas can prevent major problems down the road. You should also make sure that your downspouts are discharging the proper distance away from your house (a minimum of 10 feet) to prevent flooding.
Ask Someone to Check In On Your Home
If you’re going to be away for several days to several weeks, it’s wise to ask a trusted friend or neighbor to look in on things around your house while you’re gone. Having someone house-sit or visit your home once a day will ensure that any leaks that do occur will be caught and stopped before they can cause major damage.
Turn Off the Main Water Valve
If you can’t get anyone to look after your house, your best bet is to shut off the water supply to your home at the main valve. If you’ve never done this before, make sure to test it out before you leave by attempting to turn on a faucet.
Shut Off Water Supply Valves
Sometimes, you might not be able to shut off your main water valve because you have an automatic sprinkler system or have asked someone to water your plants while you’re away. Even so, you can shut off the water supply to the most frequent culprits of water damage, such as toilets, ice makers, washing machines, etc. These appliances will all feature individual stops (shutoff valves) on their supply lines. Simply turn the valve clockwise to stop water flow.
If you have a water emergency, feel free to give us a call at 916-285-7257. We work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We can make it "Like it never even happened."
Water Restoration Companies

In this photo, water damage caused the carpet to become soaked. Air movers are circulating the dry air around and through the carpet to dry it fast.
Who says water damage doesn't happen in the summer? Our team here at SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West-Arden Arcade sees water damage year round, no matter the season! This is the simple reason for the fact that pipes burst, appliances break, and dishwashers overflow. Sometimes, when it doesn't rain, it really does pour anyway.
In the photo below, you can see a home that was damaged by a faulty air conditioning unit. The unit started leaking, causing water damage to the floor in front of the unit. You can see how the carpet has been lifted to place an air mover underneath the carpet. This allows for the best possible airflow and fastest drying time possible, so our customer can go back to having a dry home and a working air conditioner soon!

Fair Oaks Restoration Company

Our technician, Daisy, supervising a fire cleanup. We are always here to help, with a smile you can see from behind a smoke mask!
None of us ever consider the possibility of a burst pipe, an accidental fire, mold growth or other damage that can affect our homes and buildings. But when this damage occurs, serious issues can be present. As a homeowner or manager of a commercial building, it is important to consider hiring a professional water damage restoration company to prevent the damage from getting worse.
But with so many restoration companies out there and each one claiming to be the best, it can be hard to choose the one that will provide quality service. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right water damage restoration company for the job.
Check for Certification
Remember to always hire certified professionals for restoring your home or commercial building after water damage. Look for a company that is certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC).
IICRC promotes high standards, ethics, advance communication and technical proficiency amongst restoration services. Hiring an IICRC certified damage restoration company will ensure that you are dealing with professionals who comply with highest industry standards.
Responsive Service When You Need It Most
Since fires and floods don’t discriminate when, where, who they affect, responsiveness and availability is a critical factor in mitigating damages and providing relief.
Your restoration company should be available when you need them. While we can’t speak for the competition, know that Professional Restoration offers disaster services including water damage, smoke, and fire 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
A water damage repair company must be operated by people you can trust. When it comes to your home, your belongings, your family treasures and valuables, you need to know you can trust the contractor coming into your home.
Getting major water damage is likely going to be one of the worst days of your life as a homeowner. It’s not something that is fun or easy to deal with, and a company with terrible customer service is just going to make the situation worse. Always choose a company that’s going to go the extra mile, ensure that you’re comfortable with the work, and provide the service with a comforting smile.
If you’ve suffered a fire, SERVPRO's Team of Professionals are faster to any disaster, and can help you get your life back to normal. Give us a call at 916-285-7257.
Rancho Cordova Mold Removal

This is a photo of just some of the wet insulation we had to remove from a job site! No one works harder than our technicians!
Why is mold growing in my home?
Molds are part of the natural environment. Outdoors, molds play a part in nature by breaking down dead organic matter such as fallen leaves and dead trees, but indoors, mold growth should be avoided. Molds reproduce by means of tiny spores; the spores are invisible to the naked eye and float through outdoor and indoor air. Mold may begin growing indoors when mold spores land on surfaces that are wet. There are many types of mold, and none of them will grow without water or moisture.
If you already have a mold problem – ACT QUICKLY. Mold damages what it grows on. The longer it grows, the more damage it can cause.
If wet or damp materials or areas are dried 24-48 hours after a leak or spill happens, in most cases mold will not grow.
- Clean and repair roof gutters regularly.
- Make sure the ground slopes away from the building foundation, so that water does not enter or collect around the foundation.
- Keep air conditioning drip pans clean and the drain lines unobstructed and flowing properly.
- Keep indoor humidity low. If possible, keep indoor humidity below 60 percent (ideally between 30 and 50 percent) relative humidity. Relative humidity can be measured with a moisture or humidity meter, a small, inexpensive ($10-$50) instrument available at many hardware stores.
- If you see condensation or moisture collecting on windows, walls or pipes - ACT QUICKLY to dry the wet surface and reduce the moisture/water source. Condensation can be a sign of high humidity.
Actions that will help to reduce humidity:
- Vent appliances that produce moisture, such as clothes dryers, stoves, and kerosene heaters to the outside where possible. (Combustion appliances such as stoves and kerosene heaters produce water vapor and will increase the humidity unless vented to the outside.)
- Use air conditioners and/or de-humidifiers when needed.
- Run the bathroom fan or open the window when showering. Use exhaust fans or open windows whenever cooking, running the dishwasher or dishwashing, etc.
Actions that will help prevent condensation:
- Reduce the humidity
- Increase ventilation or air movement by opening doors and/or windows, when practical. Use fans as needed.
- Cover cold surfaces, such as cold water pipes, with insulation.
- Increase air temperature.
If you have mold in your Sacramento or Rancho Cordova home, it is important to resolve the issue before it starts.

Sacramento Air Duct Cleaning
2/14/2019 (Permalink)
We clean ducts with the brand new state of the art PDC 4000 machine.
Air Duct cleaning can be an important way to improve the indoor air quality of your home or commercial building.
The National Air Duct Cleaning Association (NADCA) gives some basic information on their website:
In addition to normal accumulations of dust and dirt found in all homes with air ducts, there are several other factors that can increase the need for regular HVAC system cleaning:
Some occupants are more sensitive to these contaminants than others. Allergy and asthma sufferers, as well as young children and the elderly tend to be more susceptible to the types of poor indoor air quality that air duct cleaning can help address.
Avoid the Scams:
Air Duct cleaning should be done by professional with professional equipment. NADCA also gives some great tips on preventing yourself from being scammed by poor air duct cleaning.
If you would like to discuss having your ducts cleaned, give SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden-Arcade a call at 916-285-7257.
The Biology of Mold
2/13/2019 (Permalink)
When water collected underneath this sink, it was not dried properly and resulted in mold growth.
Mold is a fungus and classed as a saprophyte, which means that most types find nutrients by decomposing organic matter. There are over 100,000 types of mold that exist within nature.
Why Use Containment?
Starting as a tiny spore, mold begins in a cluster that contains thousands and thousands of spores. When something disrupts the spore mass, thousands of mold spores are set free, until they settle. Therefore it is important to have mold containment. During the process of cleaning and removing moldy materials, SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden-Arcade sets up plastic barriers to avoid spreading these tiny spores to clean areas of the structure.
What Can Make Fungi and Molds Harmful?
Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by microfungi that can cause health effects. Mycotoxins can be found attached to mold spores and fragments of mold.
At first, you cannot see mold spores. Disturbances of mold can cause spores to mass aerosolize, releasing thousands of spores into the air and you cannot see which materials are affected by these settled spores.
How Can I Prevent Mold Growth?
A fast response to water damage is of the utmost importance when trying to prevent mold growth. Any and all structures that have been damaged by water have the potential to grow mold. In order to prevent mold growth, you should keep good ventilation of your home, keep a dry environment, and the use of fungicides and biocides.
SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden-Arcade specializes in mold remediation.
If you've seen the signs of mold growth in your home, call us at 916-285-7257!
5 Principles of Mold Remediation
2/12/2019 (Permalink)
This photo is of a home that experienced water damage that was left untreated, causing mold growth.
Principle 1: Safety and Health
Here at SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden-Arcade, our top priority is the safety of our customers and employees when doing any form of remediation. Our technicians are trained to use engineering controls such as controlled demolition and source containment. They also use plastic containment to keep themselves and the rest of the structure from being contaminated further. The use of Personal Protective Equipment is also necessary for the safety of whomever enters the containment due to health concerns. Technicians are also trained by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration (IICRC) to follow OSHA standards.
Principle 2: Project Documentation
Our technicians take documentation before, during, and after remediation. This is using pictures, written statements, and taking measurements. Our team here at SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden-Arcade prides ourselves in taking accountability of our actions through project documentation.
Principle 3: Control Contaminant at its Source
Containment is used to control mold at its source. It also minimizes dust and debris during demolition. We also use large fans, called air filtration devices (AFD), to circulate air through a filtered system while performing mold remediation. Any airborne contaminants and particles are removed through a series of filters.
Principle 4: Removal of Contaminant
The removal of mold from a structure begins with disposing of any porous materials contaminated extensively with mold and physically removing the mold from the structure. Our technicians then clean mold from nonporous materials and HEPA vacuum all surfaces.
Principle 5: Prevent Further Contamination by Correcting Moisture Problem
Our team at SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden-Arcade are trained to identify and correct any moisture problems that may contribute to mold. They also would dry the structure now if it was still wet from a water loss.
SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden-Arcade technicians are trained extensively in mold remediation to keep you and your family safe during mitigation. If you have found mold in your home, give us a call at 916-285-7257. We are always here to help.
Sacramento Mold Removal
2/8/2019 (Permalink)
A vacant home in Sacramento had a leak in the ceiling of this closet, causing mold to grow within a few weeks.
Molds and fungi are found throughout nature. Some molds, like penicillin, are useful and can be helpful in our lives, while other forms of mold can be very harmful. Excessive amounts of mold, specific types of mold, and over exposure to mold can present health concerns for some people such as runny nose, sneezing, coughing, aggravation of asthma, sore throat, or inflammation of sinuses.
Molds need four things to survive: organic material for a food source, warmth, oxygen, and moisture. When water damages occur, it presents moisture into the environment. If this water damage isn’t addressed right away, then the resulting damage can present increased risk of harmful mold growth.
Do you think your home or business might have mold? Here’s what to be alert for:
- The presence of visible mold
- Strong musty odors, which may indicate mold presence
- Any evidence of past moisture problems which may have caused undetected mold growth
- Excessive humidity
SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden-Arcade professionals care about proper restoration of your structure and, in most water damage situations, can safely restore your building to preloss condition.

This is a door that was completely saturated by water damage. After being left for several weeks, mold developed and the door needed removal.
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Apartment Water Damage
12/20/2018 (Permalink)
In this photo, our technician Daniel is wearing personal protective equipment before cleaning a contaminated bathroom in an apartment building.
In Sacramento and other areas in the valley, rain is a part of life. Being that we are surrounded by two large rivers, flooding can happen easily from weather, let alone all the ways that flooding can happen internally. (From blown water heaters, to burst pipes, we have seen it all!) When you are a landlord or a tenant when water damage hits, you may not know where to turn. It is important to know your rights in this situation.
If you are a property manager or landlord...
It is your responsibility to make sure that your property is habitable by its occupants. Water damage can easily lead to situations that are dangerous for the tenants’ health. If it is too dangerous to stay, then you must find them somewhere to live while work is being done. According to California Civil Code section 1941, the landlord is responsible for providing tenants with habitable living conditions and repair any problem that makes the property uninhabitable, including water damage, with the exception of problems caused by the tenant, guests, children, or pets.
Your property manager should be able to help you dry out the water from the building, although they are not required to cover the loss or damage of your personal items. Review your rental agreement carefully to determine who is responsible for your repairs. Hopefully, you have renter’s insurance, and your policy can cover the loss of any personal items damaged by water damage.
Preparation is Key
Water damage is every renter’s and property manager’s nightmare. It is best to know what to expect and how to protect yourself if it occurs. Having a relationship with a water restoration company can save your property more quickly, and SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden Arcade is offering free Emergency Ready Plans for the upcoming year. Don’t let water damage take control of your life. Give us a call today at 916-285-7257.

Immediate Fire Restoration
12/19/2018 (Permalink)
In this hallway of a Sacramento home, you can see the soot buildup from a fire on the sides of the walls. Everything in this home was cleaned.
When your home or business is affected by fire damage, the aftermath is overwhelming, but if the restoration is postponed, the destruction from smoke damage will worsen. Whenever a fire damage occurs, firefighting efforts may cause water damage on the site as well. The longer you wait to assess this damage, the more repairs you will need to fix – which may be reflected in your bill for damages when all is said and done. To avoid costly repairs and long-term issues, it is important to make fire damage restoration a priority in order to get your home back to normal as soon as possible.
One of the most important steps to take when dealing with fire restoration is to find a quality fire restoration services that can help you assess the damage, give you an estimate on costs and start the clean up process. It is important to contact your home insurance company to make them aware of the fire and they may provide you with referrals for reliable restoration companies in your area. It is pivotal to enlist the help of a licensed and insured fire damage restoration company to prevent further damage to your home. Most restoration companies are trained extensively to handle this type of damage and many will perform some of the following steps to help you through the initial fire cleanup.
- Smoke and fire damage restoration services will try to save as many of your home and personal belongings (such as appliances, furniture and clothing) as they can.
- Document everything they remove from your home by taking pictures and/or keeping written records.
- Return any salvageable furniture and appliances back to your home, after the fire restoration is complete.
- Work quickly and carefully to get you back in your home as soon as possible, and stay in contact with you to make sure the repairs were done correctly and your home isn't experiencing any other problems.
Be sure to go through your home insurance company when hiring a fire damage restoration service, or do a thorough background check if you choose one on your own to make sure they are licensed and insured. Be wary of “fire chasing” contractors who target victims of house fires and pressure them into signing expensive repair contracts, perform extremely low-quality repair work and might not be licensed or insured.
While it is so important to have a qualified restoration company to handle your smoke damage restoration, there are some things that you can do to minimize the initial damage before professionals arrive. If it is possible to enter your house, make sure you’re wearing work gloves, long sleeves/pants, and proper respiratory protection, such as a N95+ mask because exposure to soot can cause respiratory problems and other medical issues.
- Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpet.
- Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil our home.
- Place dry towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery, and high traffic areas.
- If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odors.
- Wipe soot from chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim and appliances, then protect these surfaces with a light coating of lubricant.
- Wash both sides of leaves on house plants.
- Change HVAC filter, but leave system off until a trained professional can check the system.
- Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of HVAC system.
If your home has been affected by fire or smoke damage, SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden-Arcade has licensed, background checked technicians with a wealth of knowledge ready to help you out. To get an estimate, give us a call at 916-285-7257.
Water Damage Sacramento

5 Principles of Water Damage
SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden-Arcade believes in effective water restoration, in fact it is the cornerstone of our business. The water restoration industry describes the process of drying wet building materials and contents in five fundamental principles, which is determined by the IICRC (Institute of Inspection cleaning and Restoration Certification). Our technicians receive classes from the IICRC to learn to apply these principles effectively, so that our restorers can respond promptly whenever water intrudes in a building.
Principle 1: Safety
On a SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden-Arcade worksite, safety is every single technician’s main responsibility. A primary concern of water damage is that our restorers make an effort to inform and protect the occupants at all costs from whatever safety issues may arise during a project.
Principle 2: Document conditions and work procedures
Our team has come to the realization that communication is so important to the restoration business. From talking with the building’s occupants with the observations to help define the nature of the water damage. This information is then gathered from this initial inspection and documented and used by their insurance company to plan the necessary emergency procedures.
Our restorers are constantly conducting ongoing inspections while on site to measure the moisture contents inside the building in materials affected by the water. When the structure is considered dry again, restorers must conduct a final inspection.
Principle 3: Mitigation
A concern the restorer’s will have on a water damage site is to prevent any further damages caused by water to become worse. Effective mitigation of a water intrusion will reduce the amount of damage a property suffers and will also reduce the cost of restoring the property to its condition before the loss.
The main goal of mitigation is to control the moisture and contamination. The restorer will check for the source of the moisture problems in the building. This source of moisture or water needs to be stopped or drying will not be successful. The building owner is responsible for correcting the source of the water intrusion, but SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden-Arcade will assist in identifying the source.
Principle 4: Drying
SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden Arcade’s main task is to reduce the time that building materials are excessively wet. The faster we can return your items to a dry condition, the less damage will result. The drying process includes these procedures:
- Removing excess water through:
- Enhance evaporation of moisture
- Remove water vapor by dehumidification or ventilation
- Control temperature to enhance moisture removal
Once our technicians can confirm that the moisture content of the structure and contents have reached their drying goals, the drying services our done. Now you can begin your restoration services. Now it is time to perform any repairs and cleaning tasks needed to return the property to its preloss conditions.
In rain or shine, SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden-Arcade can help you return your property back to normal. We are always here to help. Give us a call today at 916-285-7257.
Wildfire Cleanup
12/12/2018 (Permalink)
This is just one of the huge trailers we have to use in the Camp Fire clean up.
In the last month, California has seen some of the most dangerous wild fires in our state’s history. The strong winds and low humidity caused wildfires to erupt throughout the entire state of California. With our long drought and the hot-than-normal summers led to even drier conditions throughout the area, creating the perfect fire fuel. Both of the recent fires, the Camp Fire in Paradise, CA and the Woolsey Fire in Southern California, were violently destructive events that took far too many lives. Thankfully, the wildfires have been finally contained and are no longer a danger, but the threat of flooding still looms.
While most homes in Paradise and Ventura County may have been demolished, there is still extensive smoke and fire damage, as well as secondary water damage and soot damage, in the surrounding areas. Our franchise, SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden-Arcade, has already left for Paradise, CA to start the cleanup efforts and assist the local franchises with the cleanup.

Restaurant Clean Up
12/10/2018 (Permalink)
This job was dried and reconstructed by the end of the weekend! We are very proud of our work on this job.
Here at SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden-Arcade, we have seen our share of difficult jobs from entire basement clean ups to flooded dance studios, but when we got the call to help clean up a local Sacramento restaurant, we didn’t know what was in store for us. When we arrived on scene, we saw buckets of water on the floor that had leaked through the intricate ceiling tiles from the apartment above. We had dried the apartment above this restaurant and quickly got to work on restoring the ceiling below. It took two cranes, six technicians, thirteen air movers, and five dehumidifiers, but we finally dried this nearly 5,000 square foot restaurant in less than 2 days.
As a locally owned business in the Sacramento region, we understand the importance of a property's appearance and that every hour that the damage is present is an hour of lost productivity. Being that half of businesses that close due damage never reopen their doors, we are committed to restoring your building as quickly as possible. When you need a restoration or cleaning professional, SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden-Arcade has quality technicians and expertise to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Water Damage Signs at Home
12/5/2018 (Permalink)
In this photo, the minimal bubbling around the ceiling revealed a much bigger problem that we found in the attic.
Whether you are looking at a new home to buy or rent or are inspecting your own home, it is important to know the signs of water damage or potential water damage. Whether from a flood, fire, or leak, water damage can cause structural problems and lead to the presence of mold which can present a health risk to the occupants of the home.
What to look for
Learning the tell tale signs of water damage is an important part of homeownership so that you can identify any existing problems and be prepared to spot it in the future. Water damage can develop as changes in colors, textures, and even smells in the interior and exterior of your home. For instance, ceiling water damage is usually easier to spot than water damage in a basement because you will see stains and discoloration on a ceiling, but may not know that a musty odor can be a sign that there is a problem on the lower level of your home.
- Water Accumulation: The most obvious sign that you have water damage on your hands is areas of standing or pooling water. These can result from old or malfunctioning appliances including washers, water heaters and toilets. A puddle could also occur from a leaking roof, or from drainage pipes if the water is on the outside of your home.
- Discoloration: With water damage in your ceiling and attic, look for water spots and stains. The area can appear wet or dry and usually is a yellow, brown, or copper color in a ring. Walls may have bubbling, cracking, or peeling paint and wallpaper in addition to staining.
- Changes in texture: While you may see a lot of discoloration in walls and ceilings, the main sign of water damage in flooring is the changes in texture. This is a result of water seeping between the floorboards and pooling underneath them while the material soaks up as much water as possible. Some changes in texture include:
- Buckling: You may notice soft spots in hardwood floors due to rotten wood, which feels spongy compared to normal wood. Water can seep into subflooring of all types of flooring material and cause sagging.
- Sagging/Sinking: You may notice soft spots in hardwood floors due to rotten wood, which feels spongy compared to normal wood. Water can seep into subflooring of all types of flooring material and cause sagging.
- Cupping: Cupping occurs when water is absorbed from the sides and bottom of the wood. This normally happens when water pools underneath the wood during a water loss. The edges will slightly raise or “cup.” Cupping can often be sanded out.
- Crowning: Crowning occurs when the top of the wood holds more moisture than the sides and the bottom of the wood. This makes the wood arch or create a bowed shape in the middle. Most of the time you cannot sand out crowned flooring.
- Odor: Trust your sense of smell. If you smell mustiness or mildew, it's likely there was water damage and now there may be a potential mold issue. The smell may come from basements, walls, and other areas where water damage has been accumulating for some time. Trust your sense of smell. If you smell mustiness or mildew, it's likely there was water damage and now there may be a potential mold issue.
What to do if you find Water Damage
If your home has water damage or even if you suspect that you may have a problem, give SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden-Arcade a call. First, if you can, locate the problem area. Next, take any necessary steps to prevent any further damage. You may need to soak up standing water on the floor with towels or shut off your home's water supply.
Then, call your home insurance company to report the damage and contact a licensed professional to begin the cleanup process. We will work with your insurance company to help you determine your next steps.

Holiday Fire TIps
12/3/2018 (Permalink)
Be fire safe this holiday season!
Last year in 2018, SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden-Arcade did an article on Holiday Kitchen Tips, which was very well loved and we highly recommend you to check it out. And while it was a comprehensive look on Holiday cooking, we decided to broaden our scope this year and offer some extra tips on candles and Christmas tree safety. Because while you might not know it, the top three days for home candle fires are Christmas, New Year’s Day, and Christmas Eve, according to the National Fire Protection Association. These hallmarks of the holiday season with twinkling lights and brilliant evergreens that we love so much can quickly turn this festive time of year into a devastating one.
Cooking fires are without a doubt the leading cause of US home fires and injuries year-round, Christmas Day is a particularly risky day for cooking with a 72% increase in the number of home cooking fires compared to a typical day. We already covered a good few tips you can check out here, but we just wanted to reiterate a couple for this holiday season.
- Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol, don’t use the stove or stovetop.
- Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling, or broiling food.
- If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the kitchen while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
- Keep anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — away from your stovetop.
Learn more about Cooking Safety in your home here.
While Christmas tree fires aren’t super common, they are far more deadly than the average house fire. Lets get a couple of our facts straight:
- One of every three home Christmas tree fires is caused by electrical problems.
- Although Christmas tree fires are not common, when they do occur, they are more likely to be serious. On average, one out of every 32 reported home Christmas tree fires resulted in a death, compared to an average of one death per 143 reported home fires.
- A heat source too close to the tree causes roughly one in every four (25%!) of the fires.
Christmas tree safety doesn’t need to be hard! It’s about being vigilant and careful while you celebrate the holidays. It is important to be fire smart. A small fire that spreads to a Christmas Tree can grow large very quickly.
- Picking the tree: Choose a tree with fresh green needles that do not fall off when touched. This assures that the tree will last the longest and it is dry.
- Placing the tree: Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2” from the base of the trunk.
- Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.
- Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.
- Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily.
- Lighting the tree: Use lights that have a label of a recognized testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.
- Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect.
- Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.
- Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.
- After Christmas: Get rid of the tree after Christmas or when it is dry.
- Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home, garage, or placed outside against the home.
- City of Sacramento residential yard waste customers can place trees in the street for pickup as part of the City’s Leaf Season service. Residents can find their estimated collection dates on the Sacramento Collection calendar.
- Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards and make them last longer.
December is the peak time of year for home candle fires. More than half (55 percent) of the December home decoration fires were started by candles, compared to one-third (32 percent) the remainder of the year.
Candle with Care
- Blow out all candles when you leave the room or go to bed. Avoid the use of candles in the bedroom and other areas where people may fall asleep.
- Keep candles at least 1 foot (30 centimetres) away from anything that can burn.
If you do burn candles, make sure that you...
- Use candle holders that are sturdy, and won’t tip over easily.
- Put candle holders on a sturdy, uncluttered surface.
- Light candles carefully. Keep your hair and any loose clothing away from the flame.
- Don’t burn a candle all the way down — put it out before it gets too close to the holder or container.
- Never use a candle if oxygen is used in the home.
- Have flashlights and battery-powered lighting ready to use during a power outage. Never use candles.
Lit candles are used in religious services, in places of worship, and in the home. Whether you are using one candle, or more than one on a candelabra, kinara, chanukiah or menorah, make sure you take a few moments to learn about using candles safely.
- Handheld candles should not be passed from one person to another at any time.
- When lighting candles at a candle lighting service, have the person with the unlit candle dip their candle into the flame of the lit candle.
- Lit candles should not be placed in windows where a blind or curtain could catch fire.
- Candles placed on, or near tables, altars, or shrines, must be watched by an adult.
- If a candle must burn continuously, be sure it is enclosed in a glass container and placed in a sink, on a metal tray, or in a deep basin filled with water.
Winter holidays are a time for families and friends to get together. But that also means a greater risk for fire. There are string lights, too many extension cords, and electrical hazards amok! Following a few simple tips will ensure a happy and fire-safe holiday season.
- Be careful with holiday decorations. Choose decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant.
- Keep lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn.
- Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both.
- Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect.
- Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged.
- Keep decorations away from windows and doors.
- Blow out lit candles when you leave the room or go to bed. Turn off all light strings and decorations before leaving home or going to bed
Camp Fire Update
11/30/2018 (Permalink)
We are on site in Paradise California, ready to help victims of the Camp Fire.
Authorities announced that as of Sunday, the horrific Camp Fire, which had killed at least 85 people, destroying over 14,000 residences and charred an area the size of Chicago, has finally been fully contained. Cal Fire made this announcement after spending 17 days beating back a blaze that has burned through 153,000 acres of Butte County, north of Sacramento. Those three straight days of rain helped more than 1,000 firefighters get a foothold.
Even though the fire is contained, the nightmare is far from over for displaced residents, who face dangers as some prepare to see their homes for the first time in weeks. Thousands of displaced people in shelters and hotels or camping outdoors in freezing weather face an uncertain future following the deadliest, most destructive wildfire in California history. In addition to all the homes missing, authorities expect the death toll to rise as nearly 300 people are still unaccounted for, and crews are still searching through the ash of buildings for human remains.
Crews are working to repair power lines and clear debris from roads. Partially burned or hollowed-out trees are an ever-present threat. Debris and ash could be toxic, full of heavy metals or carcinogens. Just sleeping at a home surrounded by ash and debris could be hazardous.
Please consider donating to our fundraiser to help the victims of the Camp Fire. SERVPRO of East Sacramento / West Arden-Arcade is always here to help. We understand how difficult this time is for Paradise Families and want to do as much as we can to use our platform as a Sacramento business to help Butte County.
Sacramento Water Damage Restoration Contractors
11/26/2018 (Permalink)
This is a bag of removed insulation from a water damaged Sacramento home. This insulation was so saturated with water that it needed removal.
So, you have water damage. Your floors are wet and the wood is cupping a little. The ceiling is bubbling, and starting to discolor. The water source has stopped, but there's still so much water. We know how frustrating this all can be, and thankfully, you have come to the right place!
What is at risk?
Time is essential when you are dealing with water damage and the key is to act fast! Water can damage and ruin your carpets, ceiling, and furniture, but it can also destroy precious family possessions, important documents, and irreplaceable, personal items. It is important to remove all of your valuables away from the damage including electronics, paintings, art objects, and documents to a safe, dry space if safe.
Common Water Damage Causes
Water damage can take many different forms and show up in your home or business in a number of different ways. If you suspect that you might have water damage, it’s important to know what the common causes are so that you know how to prevent minor water damage from turning into a huge problem.
Some common cause are:
- A leaky roof from a passing rainstorm or melted snow from a snowstorm
- A broken pipe from your garbage disposal, water heater, or washing machine
- Condensation around your air conditioner
Even if the issue is handled quickly, if it isn't handled professionally, water damage has been known to wreak havoc even months down the road. Often times the leak isn’t noticeable and may be behind a wall or in the ceiling.
The longer water damage goes unnoticed, the higher the chance of mold growth. Moving quickly with a professional restoration company increases the chance that your personal belongings can be saved or restored.
Our Water Damage Restoration Process
Every water disaster is different, from the amount of water to the level of contamination of the water. Each scenario requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” water damage emergency.
Step 1: Emergency Contact
Step 2: Inspection and Damage Assessment
Step 3: Water Removal/Water Extraction
Step 4: Drying and Dehumidification
Step 5: Cleaning and Repair
Step 6: Restoration

In a SBFD photo, mud and debris fill the Olive Mill Road underpass on U.S. 101 from flooding on Montecito Creek in Montecito, CA. Jan 9, 2018
While California continues it's rescue efforts of the hundreds of missing from the most deadly and destructive fire in the state's history, a new menace is emergi: debris flow. Rain is coming to the northern California region as soon as tomorrow morning, and the fires have primed the soil for another disaster that can claim yet more lives.
This is a lesson that California has learned less than a year ago in the coastal town of Montecito. Last December, the Thomas Fire burned through the hills right up to the edge of town. Only 7 homes were lost in the fire, but only a month later the scorched hills outside of town let loose a storm-driven debris flow that enveloped the town, killing 21.
The problem is a fundamental change to the soil itself. When a wildfire burns vegetation, it releases organic compounds. The soil, which normally absorbs water, is turned hydrophobic due to the organic compounds. You can pour a bottle of water on this burned soil and it’ll bead right off, as if the dirt were polished marble. The water will pool up and sit there, and it can take more than an hour for it to penetrate fire-scorched soil.
Problem number two: vegetation anchors the soil. When fire burns it away, the soil loosens. Without it, sediment has nothing to hold it in place.
Now hydrologists and meteorologists are keeping a close eye on communities that butt up against these latest fires, where the conditions are set for catastrophic debris flows when the rain comes. The debris flow can carry boulders and trees along with mud, making it more dangerous than a regular flood or a dry landslide.
If you haven’t cleared out in time and the flow comes, the recommendation is to shelter in place—moving to the upper story of your house, for instance. Out on the streets is exactly where you don't want to be, as the flow follows those paths.
It’s a brutal consideration for those trying to recover from the Camp and Woolsey fires, but it’s also an extremely important one. A menace begets another menace.
Sacramento Smoke from Camp Fire
11/15/2018 (Permalink)
This is an air scrubber we placed in a Sacramento Business to help with the Camp Fire smoke. This helps the elderly, disabled, and children.
While the Camp Fire rages in Butte County, the smoke here is thick and suffocating. Wildfire smoke often produces high concentrations of PM2.5, very fine particulate matter that can harm the heart and lungs. Local air districts track the amount of PM2.5 in the region to create an Air Quality Index. An Air Quality index over 150 is considered unhealthy – a “code red” day. An Air Quality Index over 200 is considered very unhealthy.
According to Sacramento's Spare the Air website, the current conditions of fine particulate matter in the air are hazardous. The entire population is more likely to experience serious health effects and should avoid all outdoor physical activity, remain indoors and keep activity levels low.
In order to stay safe from this air quality, public officials have recommended the following:
- STAY INDOORS!
- Wear a N95 Respirator Mask. The city of Sacramento is offering its residents free respirator masks at fire stations to deal with smoke and worsening air quality caused by the Camp Fire.
- Get an air scrubber for air filtration at your business. An air scrubber is a portable filtration system that removes particles, gasses, and/or chemicals from the air within a given area. SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden-Arcade is currently renting out air scrubbers for businesses and homes in the Sacramento Area.
- Cut back on driving. When ozone pollution is high, cut back on your driving and cancel one car trip to help lower pollution.
- Bring your lunch to work. This easy action reduces two trips, one to get to the restaurant and one to return to work.
- Postpone errands until the Spare The Air alert is over. This action will reduce one or more round-trips and keep those car emissions out of our air when pollution is already high.
- Link your errands into one big trip. This reduces pollution by minimizing cold starts. A cold engine that's been sitting for an hour or more pollutes up to five times more than a warm engine. You'll reduce pollution, save fuel and save time.
- Take public transit for one or more trips. Plan now and check out transit schedules in your area so when it's a Spare The Air day you're prepared to use public transit.
- Work from home. Working from home reduces two trips, one to get to work and one to return home. Plan now and get employer permission in advance.
- Share a ride with a friend to social and recreational activities. Instead of meeting a friend at an event, pick them up and cut down on car trips.
- Carpool to work. Share a ride to work on a Spare The Air day. Click here to find a carpool partner! And remember, carpooling just one day a week will improve our air quality all summer long.
Camp Fire Damage

Chris and Nancy Brown embrace while searching through the remains of their home, leveled by the Camp Fire in Paradise, Calif.
Noah Berger/AP
Starting last Thursday, The Camp Fire has grown exponentially and many people were forced out of their homes through evacuations. The fire wiped out the city of Paradise, leaving behind total devastation.
"Last night firefighters continued to hold established containment lines," Cal Fire said in an update Tuesday. The agency said firefighters had "worked aggressively" to protect structures in the fire's path, and that they've been working to build fire lines to establish control. But it added that dry conditions with no rain in sight and "...with steep terrain in some areas will impede firefighting efforts."
Our team here at SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden Arcade is in shock at the amount of damage that has occurred. We have already gotten several jobs for smoke damage here in Sacramento. Our technicians are prepared to leave as soon as the authorities give the clear to go to Chico and Paradise to help with the damage.
Until then, we have decided to raise money for towards the California Fire Foundation. All donations will be automatically deposited to the fund. If you can spare a couple dollars, everything helps.

Fire Damage Restorers

This is a photo of a fire damage situation in Sacramento, CA.
Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden-Arcade will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
Our Fire Damage Restoration Services
Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

This is a photo of the Carr Fire that our owner, Harold, took from outside of his hotel that he stayed in while aiding recovery of Carr Fire victims.
Not too long ago, Redding saw one of the worst fires California ever has had, the Carr Fire. This fire burned from late July to early September, and destroyed over 200,000 acres, and over 1,000 homes. The Shasta and Trinity Counties are currently shaken, but finally safe after the fire has been extinguished. SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden Arcade is not new to disaster mitigation (last year we aided with recovery of the Tubbs Fire) and quickly drove up north to help with recovery efforts. The devastation was distinct with an intense amount of smoke damage to almost every home in the area.
We are happy to have been able to help with whatever we could to restore the area as best as we could, and took on many smoke damaged homes to restore.
If your home or business has been affected a fire, please give us a call at 916-285-7257. We are always here to help.
Carpet Water Damage Restoration
9/4/2018 (Permalink)
You can see that our professionals have set several air movers along the sides of the wall and a large dehumidifier at the end of the hall.
Here at SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West-Arden Arcade, we use lots of different equipment and tools in order to properly remediate water damage done to carpets.
- Moisture detectors, hygrometers, and other meters measure the extent of moisture saturation.
- Infrared cameras may be used to find “hidden” water behind walls and ceilings.
- Submersible and gas-powered pumps are used for continuous pumping of high-level water.
- Truck-mounted and portable extraction units perform efficient water removal.
Our highly trained technicians will begin the water removal process almost as soon as they are on site. Depending on the amount of water, we may use powerful submersible pumps in addition to industrial strength, wet/dry vacuums and weighted extractors. Removing most of the water helps reduce drying time and helps prevent secondary water damage and mold and bacterial growth.
Our professionals will use room measurements, temperature, and relative humidity to determine the optimal number of air movers and dehumidifiers to dry your home or business. We’ll carefully monitor the progress using moisture meters until the materials return to acceptable drying goals.
Air movers are designed to circulate air around a room that is being dehumidified.
Dehumidifiers work by extracting the water out of the air.
When the dehumidified air is circulated in front of the wet surface, the water is able to evaporate easier.
If your carpet has been affected by water damage, give the pros a call at 916-285-7257! We would be happy to check it out for you.

Map of California Fires as of August 6, 2018
Our team here at SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden Arcade wanted to take a minute to reflect on the multiple fires that are affecting the State of California. As of this last weekend, the Mendicino Complex Fire doubled in size and became the 2nd biggest fire in California's history. The Carr Fire, which has been burning since late July in Redding, has costed lives and thousands of homes, and still remains only 45% contained.
Our team is currently standing on call waiting for approval to start the cleanup of these smoke and fire damaged homes.

The Categories of Water Damage
2/5/2018 (Permalink)
This is a photo of a cleanup for a Category 1 water damage from a broken pipe.
The first thing to do when you have a water damage is to determine the source of the water. It is important to know if the water source is from a clean water source or a contaminated water source. This information determines the category of water damage your home has. The categories are described numerically, between 1 and 3, one being clean water and three being contaminated.
Category 1 Water
Category 1 water, or clean water, is water that has been treated and doesn't contain waste. The sources of clean water include defective appliances, burst or broken pipes, and overflowing sinks. Clean water is water that has not been used. Carpets and carpet pads that have been damaged by clean water can be salvaged in some cases.
For information on what to do when your home has clean water damage, click here.
Category 2 Water
Category 2 water, or gray water, is water that has been used, but does not contain human waste. The sources of category 2 water can include sinks, showers, baths, washing machines or dishwashers. This water can cause health effects when humans are exposed to it. Carpet pad saturated with gray water must be replaced. Carpet that is saved must be cleaned thoroughly.
Category 3 Water
Category 3 water, or black water, is unsanitary water. The sources of category 3 water include sewage backups, flood waters, and toilet water. Contaminated water can cause health effects in humans. Carpets and other porous materials must be replaced when contaminated with black water.

Water Damage on Hardwood Floors
2/5/2018 (Permalink)
This floor is cupping due to water damage.

Santa Barbara Thomas Fire and What to Do
12/20/2017 (Permalink)
This is a photo of the Thomas Fire in Santa Barbara.
California has had some of the most destructive fires in its history this autumn. As the Thomas Fire burns, our team here at SERVPRO of East Sacramento/West Arden-Arcade wanted to share some tips by Business Insider on what to do if you were to get caught in a wild fire, and how you can help the communities of Goleta and Santa Barbara.
If you’re asked to evacuate your home:
Before You Leave, Prepare Your House
- Remove combustibles, including firewood, yard waste, barbecue grills, and fuel cans, from your yard.
- Close all windows, vents, and doors to prevent a draft.
- Shut off natural gas, propane, or fuel oil supplies.
- Fill any large vessels – pools, hot tubs, garbage cans, or tubs – with water to slow or discourage fire.
What to do if you get caught in a wildfire
- Don't try to outrun the blaze. Instead, look for a body of water such as a pond or river to crouch in.
- If there is no water nearby, find a depressed, cleared area with little vegetation, lie low to the ground, and cover your body with wet clothing, a blanket, or soil. Stay low and covered until the fire passes.
- Protect your lungs by breathing air closest to the ground, through a moist cloth, if possible, to avoid inhaling smoke.
Ways to help victims of the Thomas Fire
Volunteer Opportunities
- Red Cross is looking for volunteers to support the disaster response. Volunteer work ranges from phone calls, data entry and client registration, to shelter support and supply replenishment. With 7 shelters open, help is greatly appreciated.
- Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Ball Club is offering shelter to horses needing evacuation from the fires. Club Volunteer work includes help feeding, watering, and mucking out the stables of the evacuated horses. Feed and barn supply donations are also appreciated to assist with the effort. Those able to help can contact Shannon McGraw, at (805) 455-2400.

Tubbs Fire Recovery
12/6/2017 (Permalink)
This Santa Rosa community was destroyed by the Tubbs Fire on October 8, 2017.
This October the most destructive fire in California's history ravaged Sonoma County. The Tubbs Fire has taken dozens of lives and has destroyed over 36,000 acres of land, almost 3,000 homes, and 400,000 square feet of commercial buildings. Firefighters throughout Northern California drove towards Santa Rosa, to bravely extinguish the fire nonstop until it was 100% contained on Halloween Day.
This Friday marks two months since the Tubbs Fires started, and our team here in East Sacramento and the Arden-Arcade area has had the honor of working alongside other professionals throughout the Sonoma County's clean up and restoration process. It is not only our pleasure, but our moral responsibility, to help communities and families rebuild after this devastation. Although our SERVPRO team is committed to clean up and restoration, we are also doing all we can to make sure that the rebuilding process is smooth and stress-free as possible.
The important thing to remember throughout this devastating time is that although there is still a lot of work to be done, and the Sonoma County will be affected by this for a long time, we are still #SonomaStrong and all our communities will come together to rebuild after this loss.
If you would like to donate to the Red Cross to help the Sonoma Communities, click here. And if you have been affected by the Tubbs Fire or other fire damage, click here.
Holiday Kitchen Safety Tips
12/6/2017 (Permalink)
This is what your dinner table can look like if you make sure to follow important safety procedures when cooking!
If you're anything like us here at SERVPRO, the holidays can't come soon enough! With all this excitement, from gift giving to string lights and Christmas trees, it's important to remember to stay safe as you cook that holiday meal. With cooking being the number one cause of house fires, the American Red Cross provides a few tips on how to keep your home safe, so you can enjoy this wonderful time of year!
Ways to Stay Safe When You Cook Your Holiday Meal
- When frying your holiday latkes, grilling, or broiling any food, don't leave it unattended! Make sure to stay in the kitchen or turn off the stove if you need to leave the room.
- Use a timer to remind yourself of when to turn off the stove or oven. Sometimes it's too easy to get caught up in a big play while watching that Christmas Day football game and reminders are helpful!
- Make sure to wear your hair up and don't wear loose sleeves or anything that can dangle when you're cooking. An ER visit is not the way to spend the holidays, for sure!
- If you're simmering, baking, roasting, or broiling food, make sure to check it regularly. The only thing worse than burnt food is a house fire.
- Clean cooking surfaces on a regular basis to prevent grease build up (and prevent your mother in law from nagging you about it).
- Always, always check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving the house to make sure all your cooking appliances are turned off.
- Keep kids and pets away from the cooking area! Its safer for them and less stressful for you!
- Keep anything that can catch on fire (whether it be pot holders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, etc.) far away from any cooking appliances.
- Install smoke alarms near your kitchen, on each level of your home, near sleeping areas, and in bedrooms. Make sure to test the smoke alarms each month and replace your batteries in the alarms every 6 months.
- Consider installing a fire extinguisher in your house, and contact the local fire department for training on the proper uses of fire extinguishers.
Even if you follow all these tips, disasters are never planned. If you experience a disaster, give our professionals a call at 916-285-7257 and we will be more than happy to help.
